πŸ™‡ A new memory guide for SLPs

Hi! πŸ‘‹

Our newest article in the What SLPs Need to Know series is here – this time, covering all things memory.

πŸ“„ What stood out

There's lots of great information in this article, but I keep coming back to these 3 things:

1️⃣ Match treatments to severity. External aids help at every level – practice them explicitly, and train care partners too! For moderate-severe impairment, errorless learning and spaced retrieval are strong options. Internal strategies take more self-awareness, so they're better for mild-moderate.

2️⃣ Reading is a memory task too. Following along with an article or book requires working memory to hold onto the details, as well as the overall gist. Structured approaches like PQRST, RASR, and ARCS give patients a step-by-step process to follow.

3️⃣ Some great freebies! The Multifactorial Memory Questionnaire and the Everyday Memory Questionnaire-Revised are free PROMs that show how memory loss affects daily life. The FEMAT is a newer free tool for evaluating how someone uses memory strategies. Be sure to check out all of the assessment options linked in the article.

This guide also covers when errorless learning makes sense (vs. β€œgenerate-and-correct”), the type of memory we use for the future, and what to know before teaching strategies like WRAPS.

πŸ‹ Putting it into practice

The Virtual Rehab Center has several ready-to-go treatments & handouts that match the research.

Here are a few ready-to-go treatments that can help with memory deficits:

  • Spaced Retrieval: Lets you set fully customizable targets, automatically prompts at the correct time interval, and tracks progress.
  • Verbal Working Memory: Has patients say or type strings of 2-7 numbers in reverse order, with difficulty that auto-adjusts as they go.
  • Remembering Names: Teaches the RASP strategy (repeat, associate, speak, picture), then asks patients to reflect on how it went.
  • Taking Notes: Has patients listen and take notes on functional audio like voicemails or podcasts, then answer questions using only their notes.
  • Read & Remember Articles: Builds highlighting and summarizing strategies into reading comprehension practice, with 4 levels of complexity.

Most of the recovery from stroke or brain injury happens at home. It's uncharted territory, and most families are just trying to figure it out as they go. If you're looking for a little guidance, I created two free downloads. πŸ’ͺ Recovery is Possible After Stroke & Brain Injury Recovery doesn't have to stop at six months, a year, or even five years! In this download, I explain the 10 principles of neuroplasticity, a few myths I'd like to set straight, and some ideas for when it feels like...

The principles of neuroplasticity tell us that repetition and intensity matter. But most patients only get an hour or two of speech therapy per week. I think about this a lot. It's why I created the Tactus Therapy apps, and later the Virtual Rehab Center for SLPs. Now, I'm excited to announce a home exercise program your patients can use on their own. Introducing... the Virtual Rehab Center At Home! πŸŽ‰ A self-guided home exercise program designed by speech-language pathologists βš™οΈ How it Works...

Home practice shouldn't add to it. That's why we built the Virtual Rehab Center At Home.
