🚧 Mind the Gap: Research vs. Reality in Aphasia Rehab

Hello Reader,

Do your patients get the ideal amount of therapy? 🤔 Probably not, and research would agree.

📊 The Research-Practice Dosage Gap

Cavanaugh (2021) compared aphasia treatment dosage in research vs real outpatient clinics:

  • Research: median of 20 hrs over 15 sessions (≈3× per week)
  • Reality: median of 7.5 hrs over 10 sessions (1–2× per week)

That’s a 2.5× gap! 🤯 We know neuroplasticity thrives on intensity and repetition. Even the best weekly sessions can’t match what the brain needs to rewire.

⏱️ So... How Much Therapy Is Enough?

The RELEASE Collaborators (2021) found that the greatest gains in aphasia recovery were associated with 9+ hours of therapy per week, 3–5 days per week.

But… insurance limits, packed schedules, and long waitlists make that rare. Even the same universities where the research is conducted struggle to hit the ideal intensity in their own clinics. 😬

How can we help close the gap?

🦸 Technology to the Rescue!

Research shows technology can:

  • Boost motivation & participation with automated feedback to increase engagement (McKissock & Ward, 2007)
  • Increase treatment intensity for better recovery (Bhogal 2003; Harnish 2014)
  • Enable remote monitoring & tweak plans between sessions (Des Roches 2015; Bartlett 2022)
