🫶 A reminder of why you chose SLP

Hello!

I love May, because this is when the rest of the world gets a small glimpse into why this work matters so much to us.

To celebrate, I wanted to share something I love and return to myself: a collection of books, documentaries, and films about people living with the disorders we treat every day.

I first put this list together because I wanted something to hand to a patient or family member to help them feel seen, or to help them understand what their person is going through – in a way that a clinical explanation never quite does.

But I also come back to these for myself. These stories remind me why I chose this work.

A few favorites:

  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: written by a man with locked-in syndrome, by blinking his left eye to select letters
  • Still Alice: a book that every SLP who works with dementia should read at least once
  • Alive Inside: a documentary about music and memory that will wreck you in the best way

👉 Here's the full list: 12 Fascinating Stories about Adult Communication Disorders

Share it with a patient, a family member who's struggling to understand, or just bookmark it for the next time you need a reminder of why you do what you do.

And thank you for the work you do – every single day, not just in May.

Warmly,
-Megan

P.S. 🚨 A quick reminder that ALL Tactus apps are on sale through May 15th! If you (or your patients) have been waiting to buy, these are the lowest prices of the year.

P.P.S. We've put 3 great awareness handouts in the Virtual Rehab Center for members to download. Just another way the Virtual Rehab Center is making clinicians' lives easier. 🤗

The science tells a different story. Brains can re-wire and adapt long after an injury. Here are a few things that help: Repetition – doing something over and over strengthens pathways in the brain (our apps are a one-time purchase that gives you unlimited practice!) Intensity – this can be either the number of times you do...

Graphic that says: Aphasia & word finding. When someone with aphasia can't find a word, it's easy to think the word is gone. It isn't.

Hi there, Last week I shared something on social media that got 475+ likes, 214 saves, and 102 people sent it directly to someone they love. Maybe you need to hear this, too. ♥️ See the full post on Facebook or Instagram The word isn't missing. The road to it is blocked. The good news is that brains can heal. Roads can get cleared. Sometimes new roads get built around the damage. It can feel hard at first, because these "new roads" start as gravel pathways. Yes, they still get to the word......
